Actually, I find it much easier as a pedestrian to cross a roundabout than a signalized intersection. At the roundabout in Oconomowoc, you only cross traffic going one direction (about 21' wide) and then you reach a safety island, watch for traffic coming the other direction and finish crossing. At signalized intersections, you usually are crossing the entire roadway at once, and have to watch multiple directions (right turning traffic even while a walk signal is on is a major problem with children).

It also has less traffic accidents than before the roundabout, so I don't understand why people think it's more dangerous when it's actually safer and more efficient. I think some people may be afraid of change and inclined to dislike anything new that requires a learning curve.

And I do laugh when people complain about the extra walking distance to the crosswalk. Seriously? We have a national obesity epidemic in this country. Maybe part of the problem is people complaining about having to walk an extra 28'.

Believe it or not, roundabouts are very carefully designed to fit the traffic flow of the area. This one is working great! I'm sorry that some people cannot overcome the challenge of learning how to use it. I use it every day and am perfectly able to handle it.

Marti, sure walking is good. Walking through a busy intersection where the traffic does not stop doesn't sound very healthy. It reminds me of the old Frogger game. The frog ended up a smear on the road quite often.

Reading Patrick McIlheran's article Details foul a decent idea. David Nold mentioned the roundabout in Milwaukee at 25th and Canal street. He states “It’s not a big thing to drive through”. That particular roundabout handles only 3way traffic and is considerably larger than ours. It should be easy to drive through.

I don't have a problem with roundabouts in locations where they fit for the traffic flow. The one in Oconomowoc is too small and people are in too much of a hurry to get through.

I think our elected officials should have thought more about the drawbacks of a roundabout to the city rather than one upping our neighbor Okauchee.
